I bought the China made Sunjoy classic 14 ft. x 10.5 ft. retractable patio awning because it was on sale and motorized. I did read some of the reviews and testimonials, but, in general, it was more about the sale itself as cost was our #1 priority as we are not rich people. The install took a bit of time even though we did read the instructions several times and watched some videos. The awning has a partial hood that it retracts into and is supposed to keep the fabric from fading or getting wet but it does not. It extends and retracts as expected from the wall and has a manual crank – I’ll need to do more testings to come up with a more detailed review, but for now I wanted to let everyone know that the frame is already rusting after only 2 months!!

I’ve had my Sunjoy Marquise motorized awning purchased from Home Depot for several months. Installation instructions were of no help since they are in Chinese and not English, so I watched several video clips for install hints. The 14’x10’ canopy retracts into a half cassette with the push of a button. I realized a half cassette is of no help since the awning is still exposed to the elements. I should have ordered a full cassette retractable awning instead. The motor was noisier than I expected. I actually checked to make sure all my mounting bolts were tight. It sounds like a vibration of either the motor or the arms but not something I can fix. The powder coating steel (not aluminum) frame does scratch. I accidentally nicked mine with a wrench. You can adjust the pitch but use a helper to hold the arms up. It’s not an easy or quick adjustment. The fabric isn’t water resistant or waterproof and does sag if it gets wet, so we roll it up before it rains. Home Depot should not be selling this crappy Asian product!

The installation of my Sunjoy Newton manual awning was pretty easy. I’ve used tools and a level before; the hardest part was finding the studs behind the siding. I installed mine above a patio door, so the header was the easiest to find. The metal aluminum frame is powder-coated white, which goes with the house trim. Not much choice of size or fabric color at my local box-store, but the sale price was right – cheap. The manual crank is a good workout when opening or closing. I’ve bashed my elbow on the wall too many times, however. The support arms are noisy when they move. Mine sounds like an old man creaking out of a chair! The fabric I think is polyester and has already begun to lose its colour. You get what you pay for I guess. Next time I’ll shop around more and not buy a product made in China – my home country.
